What is the course about?

The course is designed to consolidate and deepen your knowledge of Latin grammar, preparing you to read and discuss unadapted texts.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Original Latin - texts to be confirmed. In addition, there will be regular grammar reviews and practice of unseen translation, comprehension, and Latin prose composition.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate a solid knowledge of complex grammar
- read and translate Latin texts with fluency and confidence
- appreciate the themes, language and style of the texts read.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for those who have studied Latin for at least 4 years or have an equivalent knowledge (A Level or first year of a university course). As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly, check the resources uploaded on Google Classroom and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The texts will be confirmed by the tutor before the course starts. We will also use John Taylor: ‘Latin Beyond GCSE’, Second Edition, Bloomsbury (ISBN 978-1-4742-9983-1) and also Via Plana – Graduated Readings in Advanced Latin, R.Ruth Taylor Briggs, Bloomsbury ISBN: 978-1853996122.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Latin 5.

Judith Rice

Judith has been teaching Classics (and other subjects) to both adults and children for over 10 years, and before that worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, as a journalist, and in charities. She has taught at the Open University, Royal Holloway, and Birkbeck and is currently Head of Classics at a school in North London, and finds the similarities and difference sbetween adult and school education both challenging and fascinating. Having returned to formal education as a mature student herself, to pursue postgraduate work in Greek cultural and intellectual history, she has a strong commitment to continuing education. She has degrees from Oxford University and Royal Holloway, University of London and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Judith's love of ancient language, literature, philosophy, and archaeology arises from an overridng interest in ideas, and in the ways that we can learn about how people have thought in different times and places.
