The course is unstructured with students pursuing self-directed projects with guidance, encouragement and support from the Tutors. Some previous experience is advised. Learning through making and following practical demonstrations, you will develop new and improved making skills, working with an increased awareness of studio ceramics and a better understanding of pottery techniques.

What will we cover?

With regular demonstrations, you will gain confidence, skills and knowledge to be able to work more independently and supported in developing your own projects.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use skills and techniques relevant to all the making processes
- Design and make pots using personal ideas
- Understand the decorative and finishing aspects of glazes
- Work with clay and glaze confidently and creatively
- Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines
- Further develop your personal ideas
- Set further goals in discussion with the tutor
- Practise and improve your skills in making ceramic forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at those with previous experience of working with clay, having enthusiasm and interest to develop their ceramic practices. This course can be taken as a standalone 12-week program or as part of a series of up to three consecutive 12-week courses, allowing you to continue learning and progressing from September to July.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and
safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

doing. Working at home with visual ideas is optional.
