What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at those with previous experience of working with clay, having enthusiasm and interest to develop their ceramic practices.This course can be taken as a standalone 12-week program or as part of a series of up to three consecutive 12-week courses, allowing you to continue learning and progressing from September to July.

There is a charge of £2.75 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
Amy graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2010. She has worked and exhibited internationally, most recently including high profile shows and Art Fairs; Art Miami, British Art Fair, the London Art Fair and ‘Collect’ with Cynthia Corbett Gallery. Amy has been nominated for several major awards; in 2023 she was shortlisted for the Brookfield Properties Craft Award with the Crafts Council, in 2016 she was selected for the prestigious Perrier-Jouet Arts Salon Prize by Barney Hare Duke in. In 2015, she was chosen for the inaugural Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize for artists who show an ‘exceptional command of ceramics’ and in 2014 represented the UK in ‘New Talent’ at the European Ceramic Context. In 2015, Hughes became the first ‘Ceramics & Industry’ residency at the V & A Museum working in collaboration with 1882Ltd. The resulting piece ‘Tryst’ being acquired by the Museum and put into limited edition production. Her work is shown at several London galleries and is held in private collections. Amy specialises in hand building: from coiling to slab building, press moulding and sprigging with a passion for surface decoration.
Alex Simpson is a practising artist, teacher and technician. Her area of specialism is hand building sculptural forms, but she teaches a wide range of ceramic techniques to children and adults. As well as City Lit she teaches ceramics at The London Sculpture workshop, Westminster Under School and from her studio. She has also worked as a technician at the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited work across the UK. In 2016 she was selected by the Barbican Arts Group Trust to undertake a solo exhibition Through Viscera at Black Horse Lane. In 2017 she was selected for the Award exhibition at the British Ceramics Biennial Stoke-on-Trent where she created a site-specific installation. Recent exhibitions include, We Sit Together For a Minute, Thames Side Studio Gallery London, Undertow, Sluice Gallery, London and The Bodies That Remain, Horse Hospital, London. In 2015 She graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Masters in Ceramics and Glass. She has a background in drawing and printmaking holding a BA in Illustration from the University of Brighton.
