This online workshop in preparing digital images for printmaking will provide an introduction to specialist tools and techniques required using Adobe Photoshop in order to prepare your imagery for printmaking processes such as screen-printing, photo-etching, polymer gravure and relief, and photo litho.

What is the course about?

Learn how to generate, digitally edit and output your imagery to support you in engaging with the many printmaking processes the require pre-digital manipulation. Learn the essential tools in altering the tonal range of an image for a photoetching or creating separations for screenprinting. This course will provide you with a complete overview and introduction to these techniques using Adobe Photoshop. You will leave this workshop knowing how to edit, prepare and output imagery ready to be used throughout the print room.
This course takes place online, however if you wish to join a classroom version please search for VS068, VS002 or VS075 which all take place in the studios at Keeley st.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

• Importing an image (including selecting appropriate size files, uploading from phone/camera and online resources, scanning imagery)
• Cleaning/editing imagery (including the use of colour modes/crop tools/selecting tools/contrast and levels)
• Resizing imagery/setting the resolution (use of bitmaps including half tone and stochastic dots)
• Outputting the image (understanding the specific requirements of each print process).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Import imagery, identify files types and re-size files
Identify and use the tools required in cleaning imagery
Discuss the difference in file tytpes and demonstrate howto create half tone and stochastic dots
Be more confident in using Adobe Photoshop to prepare imagery for a variety of printmaking techniques.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This workshop is for students who wish to learn these specialist techniques associated with printmaking. Students should be able to demonstrate some basic skills in using Adobe Photoshop. Please note that you will need your own personal copy of Adobe Photoshop (Adobe CC).
For this online course you will be using Zoom and will need to be working on a laptop or similar - this course is not suitable to be accessed by phone.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a series of live demonstrations and workshops. Technical information will be supported with handouts and resources that you can access via Google classroom.
There is no requirement to complete work outside of the class however bringing along ideas and imagery you may want to work from will improve your outcomes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please have digital copies of any imagery you wish to use as part of the workshop.

Claire Hynds

Claire Hynds is an artist specialising in printmaking, her work combines drawing and photography with traditional and digital print techniques to create hand printed, limited edition prints and books. Claire studied Fine Art at the University of Wales and was awarded an AHRB to study MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England. She has been teaching printmaking and drawing since 2002 and specialises in traditional etching, photomechanical intaglio processes (photoetching and polymer), screenprinting, bookmaking and artist books. She is a member of East London Printmakers and the Printmakers Council, dividing her time between teaching and her studio practice. Claire has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally and has work in permanent collections at the V&A, the Printmakers Council Archive and the National Museum and Gallery of Wales. Claire’s research investigates the urban environment. Visiting examples of modern architecture and new towns she examines what remains of the utopian vision of post war Britain, developing work through drawing, photography and print that explores how these spaces are experienced today.
