What is the course about?
This course is ideal for those who are new to using Procreate as well as those who have previous experience and want to further enhance their skills.
You will be guided through the initial set-up and feature of Procreate and work through a series of practical tasks, exploring line, colour, texture and composition.
From brush marks and colours to textures and lighting effects, really get to grips with how digital illustration is being used in industry.

• Creating and managing files
• Drawing in Procreate
• ‘Painting’ with brushes in Procreate
• Building a colour palette
• Exploring texture
• Using layer masks
• Using layers
• Editing images.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Open, create, edit and save working files
• Confidently use and apply a variety of drawing techniques and brush marks
• Build colour palettes and apply them directly to your artwork
• Use layer masks
• Understand how layers work and apply the to your artwork.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for learners who are both new to working with Procreate and those with some experience. Prior knowledge and basic skills in illustration are desirable.
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be delivered through:
- Presentations
- Demonstrations
- Practical work
- Individual and group tutoring
- Group discussion
Additional / extension activities may be set for you to complete at home or outside of the course hours. Completion of additional tasks is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will need your own iPad with Procreate installed, and ideally a stylus such as an Apple Pencil. Please note that City Lit is unable to provide any learners with iPads.
At City Lit, access to basic materials and resources are available as part of this course. We advise you to bring a A5/A4 sketchbook for the recording of ideas and an A3 folder and/or a USB drive to transport work to and from City Lit. Additional materials required as part of the course will be discussed by your tutor if required.
