What is the course about?

This course aims to encourage students to have build awareness of diversity within the helping relationship.

Clients want to be seen as a whole person, they want their race, culture and identity to be acknowledged.

This course helps students to address difference and diversity in a respectful and confident way.

The facilitator will share skills and expertise with students to support them to understand how their own cultural heritage plays a role in the helping relationship. We have more in common that what separates us, by addressing this helpers can work towards building an open, transparent relationship and break down barriers.

The facilitator will share skills, tools and techniques that will help students to have a rounded culturally competent perspective, when interacting in everyday life or within a future career as a counsellor.

What will we cover?

- Diversity awareness within the helper relationship
- How to confidently talk about race, culture and identity
- Recommended book reading and organisations that can support your learning
- Explore assumptions around people of colour
- Building self-awareness and cultural competence.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Be confident engaging with a diverse range of people in work, college and future counselling courses and roles.
- Build your awareness of themes people of colour may bring to the helping relationship
- Learn more about yourself and how your identity impacts on the helper relationship.

Anyone who is open to self exploration and are open to participate.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom learning, interactive and student participation, no work outside class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs, students need to bring an object that represents their race and culture and share it in the group activity.
