What is the course about?

A chance to explore recorder ensemble playing skills, playing different roles within an ensemble and learning how to play in tune and in time with other parts, and how to blend and balance sound within an ensemble setting.
If you are already an experienced player, this course provides an opportunity to experiment with playing different sizes of recorder in an ensemble setting. Music for bass recorder notated in both bass and treble clefs.

What will we cover?

• Tuning in unison and between different parts
• Awareness of different styles of recorder ensemble music
• Articulation and breathing techniques
• Playing as part of a large ensemble group
• Experience playing different instruments of the recorder family.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Understand and put into practice the essentials of ensemble playing
• Hold your own part in an ensemble with confidence
• Recognise different styles of recorder music.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for those who have played the recorder for at least a year, can read music with reasonable fluency,and wishes to try out playing ensemble repertoire with others in a friendly group.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions and group activities.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Demonstration and explanation by the tutor
• Practical work as part of a group
• Listening and discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your recorder(s) and a pencil. Music will be provided by the tutor.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to join the regular course Recorders intermediate or advanced.

Caoimhe de Paor

Having graduated top of her class from the Cork School of Music (B.Mus), Caoimhe moved to London, where she gained a distinction in her Masters in Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was also awarded the school's Concert Recital Diploma (for outstanding recital performance). Caoimhe went on to become an Artist Fellow at the conservatoire and was also invited to take part in the Handel House Talent Scheme (2014-15). She has studied with Ian Wilson, Robert Ehrlich, Pamela Thorby (GSMD) and Elizabeth Jones (CSM), as well as pariticipating in masterclasses with Kees Boeke, Karl van Steenhoven, Piers Adams, Sebastien Marq, Dan Laurin, Drora Bruck and Eric Bosgraaf. Caoimhe has achieved a number of competition successes in Ireland and the UK. She was a semi-finalist in the Irish Freemason's Young Musician of the Year for two consecutive years, a finalist in the Worshipful Company of Needlemaker's competition, a finalist in the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarships and won first prize in the Recorder Conservatoire competition at the North London Festival of Music. www.palisanderecorders.com
