Continue to develop the fundamental skills of saxophone playing, making a good sound, note-reading and improvisation, listening and playing with others. This is the 3rd term of our year long level 1 course.
What will we cover?
- Developing playing techniques: embouchure, breath control and tonguing - Learning to play a selection of notes on the saxophone - Studying relevant music theory and reading music for saxophone - learning to listen and count time as you play - Developing practice methods: long notes, scales, studies - A range of repertoire in popular styles
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate the ability to play and read a range of pieces for the saxophone - Hold a part within an ensemble piece - Demonstrate an increase in confidence and ability to improvise short phrases - Understand basic musical concepts and practice
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You need at least 8 months' experience on the instrument, so be able to play some major and minor scales, read music, and count time.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
During this course you will play in unison and simple part work. You will be taught through demonstration by the tutor. You are expected to practise musical exercises and the study tunes between classes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring your own instrument to class - alto or tenor saxophone - strap and reeds (strength 2/3).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can progress to Saxophone 2a in the next academic year. You may also be interested in one of our many Musicianship courses to support your practical learning.
Sarha is an experienced teacher and gigging musician, performing on the saxophone, arranging and composing on the piano, in classical, jazz and world music genres. Her principal band, Bollywood Brass Band, is the UK’s pioneering Indian-style wedding band, performing tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood films. Twice nominated for Songlines World Music Awards, the band has performed across the world in concerts, festivals, and Indian weddings in the UK, Europe, India, Thailand and South Africa. Sarha played with Ghanaian Highlife band Orchestre Jazira, and socialist big band, The Happy End. She also plays in the Charlie Mingus jazz cover band Hog Callin’, The Great Yiddish Parade marching band and Freylekh klezmer band. Sarha’s specialist area is World Music, and she has a PhD on the study of the Flattened Supertonic across different cultures. At CityLit she teaches jazz and classical piano, saxophone, world music styles (practical and academic courses), musicianship and music theory.
