What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be enthusuastic about the idiom of soul music and blues singing. Prior vocal and musical training will be of advantage.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Warm-up activities, breathing exercises, technical vocal exercises, learning and sharing songs. Preparing songs to sing solo. Listening, giving and receiving constructive criticism. You will learn how to maintain songs in performance; choosing songs ; song arrangement, counting in, song interpretation.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Music materials will be supplied. You may wish to record parts of the sessions with your tutor's permission.
You may wish to support your learning through a focus on reading, writing and hearing music and musical patterns. Emzee is an experienced professional vocalist of the highest caliber who hails from a musical family. Her father Don Haywoode is the legendary vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer & arranger who gained critical acclaim with THE VELOURS, an American touring band whose first tour was with Ray Charles. Emzee was signed to RCA records as a recording artist and session musician and worked with an impressive array of artists such as Bo Diddley, Dr John, Mtume, Hugh Masekala, Osibisa, Herbie Hancock, Jools Holland, Barry White, Paul Weller, Lou Rawls, & Cassandra Wilson. Emzee’s influences and training is derived directly from Doo Wop and street corner singing tradition. Emzee is a versatile and rounded musician who pours her skills into her songwriting. Her first release ‘Don’t Poison Me’ on Boss Records was an underground hit and co-written with Livingstone Brown. While continuing to perform and write music, she also dedicates her energy to teaching music.
