Do you want to improve your English? We offer a range of courses, taught in British Sign Language (BSL), for adults living in the UK who want to improve their skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and communication.

In order to join our deaf English courses, you need to have an interview and initial assessment first.

    This course will help you get become confident in your everyday communication including reading and writing. We will focus on topics that interest you and use these to help you improve the key elements of reading and writing as well as communication skills to enable you to express your thoughts and feelings including in difficult situations. You will learn to how write whole sentences and paragraphs, use adjectives effectively, organise your writing, make notes and complete drafts, spell important common words, use punctuation correctly and develop reading and writing strategies most suited to you. And you will learn some digital skills including reading and finding information from websites.

  2. English for deaf people: reading and writing (entry 1)

    This course is suitable if you have enough vocabulary to be able to read and write basic sentences. During this course, you will learn more vocabulary and grammar to help you talk, read and write about yourself, your family and friends and complete forms, short sms and e-mails.     This course will help you improve your communication skills including reading and writing. It will enable you to become confident in writing longer texts and reading more complex articles, information, descriptions and stories. You will also become more confident at formal and informal conversations. We will look at how English sentences are put together and how you can write more complex sentences confidently. We will see how formal English differs from informal English, which will help you with both your reading and writing. Along the way, you will work on your spelling strategies to improve the accuracy of your written work. And you will learn some useful digital skills including reading and finding information from websites.

    The aim of this course is to develop your reading skills in a friendly and supportive environment. During this course you will read various book stories chosen by the tutor. You will also be discussing your reading materials in BSL, learning new vocabulary and exploring the structure of English. Translating from English to BSL and summarising texts will be a large part of the sessions. This course has no exams.

  9. English grammar for deaf people: sentences, spelling & punctuation (entry 3 - level 1)

    Location on this date: Online
    This course is suitable for you if you wish to learn about how sentences are structured. You will also learn about the different punctuation marks and how to use them (such as commas, speech marks and end of sentence punctuation. The course will be working at sentence level and will not include writing (paragraphs).
