What is the course about?
Whether you are a beginner weaver, or have some experience, this course is an opportunity to explore experimental and exciting approaches to frame loom weaving. Working through a series of live demonstrations, you will learn a range of hand woven effects that explore colour, texture, woven techniques, scale, pattern, yarn and materials.
You will create an exciting and imaginative range of hand woven samples that demonstrate a unique and personal response to weaving. Each week we will be exploring a variety of different weave structures, both traditional and non-traditional. You will be working towards creating one small hand woven artwork that you may decide to frame or hang on the wall.
What will we cover?
In each session, you will be introduced to a range of different techniques for you to creatively interpret into hand woven samples. These will include ways to create texture and tactile effects, weaving simple shapes, exploring colour and shading, 3D effects and more.
You will explore and experiment with materials, fabrics and fibres to create a set of personal samples. In the last two weeks of the course, you will use your weaving skills to create one small artwork.
Each week you will dress the frame loom with a fresh warp in order to create a varied collection of fabric samples. Tips and tricks, alongside innovative production methods will be given in order to guide you towards creating one finished piece.
Session 1: Setting up the loom, identifying loom parts, creating plain weave, finishing techniques.
Session 2: Textural and tactile effects – Rya knots and colour blending.
Session 3: Soumak, inlay and hemstitching.
Session 4: Design development & finishing your artwork.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Set up and dress your frame loom independently.
- Confidently create a range of woven samples.
- Use visual inspiration (photographs, postcards etc) to inspire woven work.
- Work with different yarns, materials and fabrics.
- Finish edges professionally using a range of finishing techniques.
- Work towards creating a small hand woven artwork.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is aimed at beginners or those who wish to revisit introductory skills and build up their knowledge of frame loom weaving. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions and be willing to participate in group discussions and presenting of your own ideas and work.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks/notes/resources/ demo videos
- it is expected that you will work on personal projects outside of the class time to develop your work as the course progresses to improve and expand on your skills.
The course is supported by Google classroom as an e-learning virtual environment where handouts, and useful information will be stored. Details on how you can access the portal will be provided before the course starts.
You will need to login into our Google classroom before our sessions starts where all course materials will be stored. Details on how to access this will be provided in advance.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
- Before the course begins, please collect 5 images that you find inspiring. These may be your own photographs or postcards, or images from books, magazines or sourced from the internet. Pinterest is a great and simple method for sourcing and keeping visual inspiration.
A sketchbook would be useful to store samples and sketch designs for your loom piece.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Once you have completed this course, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to undertake an intermediate weaving course or browse the website to explore our range of contemporary textile courses.

Renata Minoldo is an artist and educator exploring the physical and emotional body through textiles, sculpture and experiences with people. She has an academic training in Fashion and Visual Arts and hands on experience in the Fashion Industry working in London and New York. She is interested in alternative ways to approaching art education, aiming to stimulate an intuitive learning and focusing on the individual processes and needs. She works with a wide variety of people, from children in galleries and primary schools to teenagers and older adults in community centres, charities and public spaces.
