What is the course about?

Learn the essential skills to play the ukulele in a group lesson. Learn about the use and history of the instrument.

What will we cover?

Learn playing technique including how to strum simple chord patterns in good time. Soon you will be able to sing simple songs and accompany other uke students, or friends.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Play the most common chords
- Play basic strumming patterns, develop good timing
- Understand and fix uke tuning
- play some songs with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is ideal for beginners to the ukulele.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will learn songs and techniques together in a group.
The tutor will give instruction, advice, and practical demonstrations of the technique taught in each session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to have a ukulele! Any colour will do.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can progress to Ukulele 2 next term.

Jake Rodrigues

Jake is a multi-instrumentalist whose work for several years has had a strong leaning towards the community and social aspects of music. His songwriting and performing builds bridges between ages and demographics, and his styles of presentation and performance attempt the same. Jake runs Froggy's Famous Fan Club (for pre-schoolers), The Cream of Tartar Show (a cabaret performance/workshop) and is his own One Man Band. He plays ukulele, harmonica, accordion, banjo, guitar, piano and percussion, sings, and writes many, many songs. innovation and re-invention have been the inspiration since the covid curse, and Jake has been exploring his unique musical take with live online shows and a collection of original songs. At City Lit Jake teaches ukulele and harmonica.
