What is the course about?

This course is designed for the practitioner to integrate the theory and application of dry needling for the management of myofascial trigger points.

The use of dry needling within the context of sports massage and other manual therapy offers an effective option to support your client’s pain management. Upon completion you will learn safe applications and protocols to treat a range of muscles in the body.

Session 5 is an advanced workshop focusing on using dry needling for the management of head and neck pain (including working with the TMJ). Upon completion you will receive a City Lit certificate of attendance.

This ITEC Award is comprised of two units:

USP196: Theory of dry needling practice
This unit will equip you with the underpinning knowledge of the theory of dry needling, myofascial pain syndrome and myofascial trigger points.

USP197: Planning and delivering safe and effective dry needling techniques
This unit will explore how to prepare and deliver dry needling safely. We will look into the indications, contraindication, cautions and contra-actions to using dry needling along with hands on application to common muscles.


Day 5
We will look at muscles including the Sternocliedomastoid, Masseter, Temporalis along with management approaches for TMJ dysfunction, sinus related problems, headaches arising from myofascial trigger points and more.

The course is hands on, you will be practising dry needling throughout with ongoing support from the tutor. You must be comfortable to give and receive treatment.

- contra-indications, safety considerations and precautions when providing dry needling techniques
- Myofascial pain and trigger points
- The theory and mechanisms of dry needling
- How to provide dry needling techniques
- Dry needling techniques to common muscle groups.

USP196: Theory of dry needling practice
- Compare and contrast dry needling, acupuncture and Chinese medicine
- Explain myofascial pain and trigger points
- Appreciate and discuss the theory and mechanisms of dry needling

USP197: Planning and delivering safe and effective dry needling techniques
¿ Outline the contra-indications, safety considerations and precautions when providing dry needling techniques
¿ Demonstrate dry needling techniques to a selection of muscles
¿ Plan and prepare for dry needling techniques
¿ Administer dry needling techniques to common muscle groups

You will also reflect on how you can integrate dry needling into your current manual therapy practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is designed for those who hold a level 4 or above qualification in Sports massage or equivalent. This course is also suitable for practitioners of physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic. Please contact the department if you are a final year student and would like to attend.

Due to the nature of this training you must have a good working knowledge of surface anatomy.

This course is evidenced through a portfolio of coursework and practical assessment

The portfolio consists of a series of mini assignments and evidence of 5 supervised dry needling treatments

The practical assessment will involve you performing a dry needling treatment which will be assessed by a representative of ITEC. Please note that you will be required to bring a model for this assessment.

Due to the nature of this training you must have a good working knowledge of surface anatomy.


This course is evidenced through a portfolio of coursework and practical assessment

The portfolio consists of a series of mini assignments and evidence of 5 supervised dry needling treatments

The practical assessment will involve you performing a dry needling treatment which will be assessed by a representative of ITEC. Please note that you will be required to bring a model for this assessment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a variety of ways including:
- Class discussions and presentations
- Hands on demonstrations
- Pair and small group work

Outside of the classroom you are required to complete a series of assignments to evidence your underpinning knowledge.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Shorts, t-shirt or sports top (standing examination, postural assessing)
Pen and paper for making notes, equipment for practice in the classroom will be provided by City Lit.

Trevor England

Trevor is a registered and practising Osteopath, Complementary Therapist and Pilates instructor who has been working within the sector since 2004. He has a practice in Central London which enables him to share clinical experiences with his students. Trevor has had the opportunity to promote complementary medicine through interviews on BBC London and numerous magazine reviews. He has also written articles for industry and professional body magazines and presented at the CAM expo, London. Trevor began teaching Sports and Remedial Massage in 2007 and has since taught a variety of subjects for complementary therapy and fitness sectors throughout the UK. He is a fully qualified tutor, assessor and mentor/coach. Outside of complementary medicine, Trevor also works in teacher education at City Lit. Trevor began his Pilates journey from an early age as a part of dance training. He completed his Pilates qualification with STOTT PILATES and since qualifying, has taught at several Pilates studios and gyms.
