What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to introduce students to basic oral communication skills in Welsh; to give them the opportunity to practise and improve these skills in a variety of day to day situations; to promote interest in and awareness of the language and its culture today.

What will we cover?

Topics will include shopping, holidays, describing people and places and expressing opinion about both.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- ask for something in a café.
- say you have common ailments.
- say what you are able to do
- describe people and places and give opinions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Welsh beginners 1 & 2 or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Rhianwen Daniel is a researcher and tutor specialising in nationalism studies, political ideologies, and the relationship between language and culture. She holds a PhD in politics and international relations and teaches courses in politics and the Welsh language at City Lit. Rhianwen has lectured at universities in Cardiff, Reading, and Germany, and published a range of articles in peer-reviewed and journalistic outlets. Rhianwen welcomes all kinds of viewpoints and greatly encourages the sharing of cross-cultural perspectives in all classes.
