What is the course about?

Work on four tunes covering four genres of Brazilian music. Practical exercises will introduce the rhythmic foundation of each genre, and you will study harmonic and melodic concepts. Develop accompanying and soloing skills. The sessions will include an episode of listening to introduce Brazilian repertoire, composers, and historical context. The ensemble welcomes players of all instruments.
Tutor Luiz Morais is a unique voice in contemporary Brazilian jazz guitar. He leads his own sextet, and plays with Choro ensemble Alvorado.

What will we cover?

A sample each of Samba, Bossa nova, Choro and Baiao.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Recognise and play Brazilian musical genres based on identifying rhythms and melodic/harmonic language.
Witness how to create an arrangement within the Brazilian music idiom.
Be a confident member of the ensemble, playing and improvising.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Aimed at intermediate and advanced level instrumentalists and singers from any musical background with an interest in Brazilian music. The ability to read music and a basic knowledge of harmony will be required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The workshop will run in ensemble format with focus on interplay so students will be expected to react and build upon each other's playing. Sheet music will be sent to enrolled students prior to the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own instrument. All other materials will be supplied by the tutor.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit offers a series of World music courses, as well as DanceDance in related styles (e.g. Samba, Salsa, Tango, Flamenco).
