Through discussion of selected biographies we will explore in depth key individuals in world history , their legacy and the era in which they lived.The first class will discuss The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft by Claire Tomalin. Winner of the Whitbread First Book Prize As this was published a few years ago there are cheap 2nd had copies available.

This course will introduce and discuss the fiction of renowned author, Angela Carter, specifically focusing upon one novel and one short story. Carter wanted her writing to ‘demythologise the fictions that regulate our lives’, to explore how society narrates us into being and holds us there. In doing so, she offers us a chance to read and, ultimately, release ourselves through her work, as we come to understand the relationship between fiction and reality. For Carter, both of these – fiction and reality – are two sides of the same coin.

Revise, consolidate and improve your listening and speaking skills on this lively course, which will help you communicate more confidently in daily life situations.

This online course will prepare you for the exam of the 'Diplôme d'études en langue française' (DELF), B2 level, in June 2025. Suitable if you have studied French for about four to five years. Ideal if you would like to live, study or work in France.

There will be a minimum of two mock exams per term.

Prepare for the 'Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera B2'. The course does not include exam fees and each learner will be responsible for their own enrolment in the exam. Please note that you should have studied Spanish for about 5 years or have an equivalent level.







Please do not buy the book until after the first session, as if you transfer to another course, you will use a different book.

You will consolidate your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and will work towards achieving better fluency at an intermediate level. You will develop your competence in reading Chinese characters. Suitable if you have studied Chinese for 5-6 years part time or have an equivalent level.

If you often manage to conceal your stammering (also known as stuttering), this course will help you to understand your particular type of stammering, reduce negative feelings, learn strategies to speak more easily and develop self-confidence.

This course explores the transformative period of Russian history from 1860 to 1924, encompassing the autocratic rule of the Tsars, the revolutionary upheavals of 1905 and 1917, the chaos of the civil war, and the consolidation of the Bolshevik regime. Students will examine key events, figures, and ideologies that shaped modern Russia, delving into the complexities of political, social, and economic changes during this era.



Please note: this course includes much of the material covered in previous Russian Revolution courses at the City Lit. Moreover this course is taught at an introductory level. Tutor: Zoe Quinn.

Suitable if you have completed Russian at Level 3, Level 4 or above. Learn Russian through this culturally immersive language course with the focus on Russian art. The emphasis is on developing listening and speaking skills. There will be some writing assignments too.
