This course is all about painting still life compositions, looking at how to capture the characteristics of a variety of objects in the studio, on both a small and large scale. The emphasis will be on the different watercolour techniques including primary, secondary and tertiary watercolour mixing. Suitable for beginenrs as well as a refresher course for those with previous experience of watercolour.

What is the course about?

This class is aimed at beginners to watercolour, or as a refresher course for those students who have some experience of this exciting and versatile medium. With reference to a variety of artists work we will explore the genre of Still-Life and the varying watercolour techniques relevant to the subject.

What will we cover?

We will cover primary, secondary and tertiary colour mixing as well as watercolour techniques particular to the still-life genre, such as wet on wet, dry-brush etc. We will look at different artists and examine how they use watercolour as inspiration for the use of different styles of paint application.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Colour mixing with watercolour paints
• Vary your approach to mark making and brush technique
• Develop compositions using still-life as the subject matter
• Recognise the work of a variety of watercolour artists working with the still life genre.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners or as a refresher course for students who have some experience in watercolour painting.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, individual and group tuition and discussion. There will be an offsite museum visit.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are watercolour paints available for the first session, but students are encouraged to bring their own paints and a large watercolour brush as the course develops. Advice on all materials will be given at the first session. There is a charge for the watercolour paper we use at cost price.

Hilary Rosen

Hilary Rosen is a born and bred artist both working and teaching in London. She graduated from Nottingham where she received her BA Hons in Fine followed by three years at the RCA where she achieved an MA from the RCA at the Painting School . Hilary has been painting and printmaking ever since and is based in a studio in Bethnal Green. Her work has regulary been exhibited in a gallery in Hamburg over the past 30 years, alongisde other exhibitions and shows both internationally and nationally including India, Australia, Ireland, Scotland and various locations in England. Her continuing practice has been complimented alongside her teaching, of which has taken place at City lit and other institutions as a visiting lecturer including UEL, Nottingham Trent and Middlesex University. Hilary's main teaching involvement at City lit is within the water colour courses but also teaches within other drawing and painting provisions.
