What is the course about?

The course is an introduction to Psychology, covering theories from five schools of psychological thought - Behaviourist, Psychoanalytic, Cognitive, Humanist and Biological. We will be exploring a range of theories which explain our drives and motivations from different perspectives and as well as recognising applications of psychological theory in everyday life.

What will we cover?

Over the two days we will provide (preliminary) answers to some of the
main questions psychologists are addressing; including:

• What motivates us and why do we do the things we do?
• How do we change our behaviour?
• What is the unconscious?
• Is it true that perception is reality?
• What does brain science tell us?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Explain, in simple terms, some key psychological theories.
Understand some of the factors that drive our behaviour.
Notice where the different psychological theories have relevance and application today.
Critique the theories (strengths and limitations) and reflect on new insights.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is introductory. You will need to speak English fluently. You should also be able to follow simple written
and verbal instructions to participate in group work, and you might want to take notes. You should be prepared to
question your assumptions about the topics that are being discussed and respect the viewpoints of others.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will consist of pair and group work, discussions and interactive presentations by the course tutor.
Students are invited to present their own prior knowledge and experience.
There will be short exercises, and students might be directed to online resources or further reading, depending on
the topics covered.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Any suggested readings will be optional. You might want to bring paper and pen to take notes during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
