This course will explore the pottery wheel as a tool. You will create objects by throwing forms, distorting, stretching, joining and constructing. The aim is to broaden your skills and understanding of materials and techniques. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment, and develop your personal ideas.
What will we cover?
The creation of functional or non-functional objects from more than one thrown form. How to throw a slab, throw a coil and join them when soft or leather hard. Ideas and techniques for developing form and surface, including ways of evaluating proportion and balance.
You can select pieces of work for biscuit-firing and collect after the course has ended and return for a separate glazing workshop in September (‘Glazing your work’ VR767 / VR766).
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Assemble two or more thrown forms - Demonstrate 3 techniques for developing ceramic forms and surfaces. - Apply basic concepts of proportion and balance to your work. - Evaluate your ideas. - Identify and work to health and safety guidelines.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for anyone who has basic throwing experience - through to those with more advanced skills. If you are newer to throwing we also offer: ‘Intensive throwing week: refreshers’ (course code VR772).
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through demonstration, group and individual tuition, slide lecture and visual information.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Tools are available within the department for use but you may bring your own favourites. There is a charge of £3.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24:00 per bag/ £12:00 per half bag.
In the final session you will need to pay for materials that you have used, payments to be made by contactless card reader.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
City Lit Ceramics offers a range of part-time, full-time courses and workshops at different levels. Students will be encouraged to progress onto more challenging projects at their individual level. There will also be a session mid- September if you would like to glaze work from your course (VR767,VR766 Glazing your work).

Carina Ciscato was born in Sao Paulo Brazil, in 1970. After graduating in Industrial Design in ’92 in Sao Paulo, she was introduced to Studio Pottery in Krefeld Germany where she spent 1 year working in the studio of Marietta Cremer. Upon return to Brazil she became apprentice to Lucia Ramenzoni, one of Sao Paulo’s leading potters. Following her 6 year apprenticeship and a number of courses in the US, Carina starts to show her work in local galleries and through museum shops. In 1999 Carina moved to London where she became an assistant in the studio of Julian Stair and Edmund de Waal. The move from Brazil to the UK and the change in culture and attitudes to ceramics has seen exciting new directions. Since 2003 Carina established her studio in Vanguard Court, South London where she still works to this present day. www.carinaciscato.co.uk
