What is the course about?
The course is designed to improve and deepen your knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar, preparing you to read and discuss unadapted texts in future courses.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will use Taylor Greek to GCSE Vol. II, Athenaze Vol. I and II and Reading Greek, by JACT (2 volumes). The exact starting point will be confirmed by the tutor on the first session of the course. Grammar will be accompanied by the reading of texts by Greek authors. Other texts may be suggested by the tutor at the start of the course.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- demonstrate a solid knowledge of grammar
- read and translate Ancient Greek texts with fluency and confidence
- appreciate the themes, language and style of the texts read
- have a deeper understanding of the world of ancient Greece.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for those who have studied Ancient Greek for 3/4 years or have an equivalent knowledge (A Level or first year of a university course). As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 2-3 hours per week.

Textbooks:
“Reading Greek” by the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell, CUP),
2nd edition, 2 volumes:

An e-book version can also be purchased.
Other texts will be confirmed by the tutor during the first session of the course.

Sean has been teaching Greek and Latin for a very long time, and he loves what he does. While not doing that, he's made the time to write around forty books. They also include editions of Book VI of "The Aeneid," the "Historia Langobardorum" of Paul the Deacon, and various parts of St Jerome's Latin version of The New Testament.
