What is the course about?

This is the account, by the great philosopher Plato, of the trial of his master Socrates, accused in 399BC of impiety and corruption of the young. On alternate weeks we shall be using an excellent book, taking us one step at a time through advanced points of grammar.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Plato is a master of style as well as language, and we shall examine how he creates Socrates’ arguments, and how he varies formal and colloquial speech.
Also, on alternate weeks we shall be revising grammar using ‘Writing Greek’ by Anderson & Taylor.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- recognise and use impersonal verbs, the accusative absolute, and gerundive
- recognise and translate with confidence all the regular constructions in Greek grammar.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Greek for three years and should have completed Classical Greek 5 Lower - module 2, or have equivalent experience. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work; translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Homework: about 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The class is using the book "OCR Anthology for Classical Greek AS/A Level, 2024-26" - Presently with Book 1 of The Republic.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any of the Classical Greek 5 courses available in September.

Sean Gabb

Sean has been teaching Greek and Latin for a very long time, and he loves what he does. While not doing that, he's made the time to write around forty books. These include twelve historical novels, by "Richard Blake," and published by Hodder & Stoughton. They also include editions of Book VI of "The Aeneid," the "Historia Langobardorum" of Paul the Deacon, and various parts of St Jerome's Latin version of The New Testament. One of his science fiction novels was nominated for the 2015 Prometheus Award.
