Visual Communication Courses - Online & in London

Visual communication is the basis of our relationship and our understanding with the world and we come into contact with this area of design daily. Through a combination of working with either text, image or both, our creative courses will help students understand the basic concepts and processes involved in visual communication and how to communicate ideas and work visually to different audiences in different ways.

We offer a variety of courses that experiment and explore ways of working in analogue or digital, still or interactive and in a host of subjects. From drafting a story board in pencil to designing a new graphic design poster designing creative packaging using the latest adobe software, our courses and specialist workshops will provoke you into thinking and talking about design.

As well as our short courses on offer within graphic design, illustration or animation we also have a selection of City Lit long courses. These one year long courses guide students through the key stages of a particular subject with many students progressing onto our advanced practice courses or into industry.

Our digital studios have everything students need to complete their next creative challenge, using the latest Adobe CC software, Apple Mac computers, Wacom tablets and a range of printers and scanners including access to our 3D printing and laser cutting digital suite.

  1. Typography workshop: designing and working with type

    Typography is the keystone of good graphic design and can be used in a wide range of approaches to influence your artwork and design intentions. Designing and working with type will offer a practical opportunity to develop an in-depth appreciation of typography, learning its history, how type has been used in industry and in referecne to many world infleuntial deisgners.     City Lit Graphic Design Part 2 provides an opportunity to pursue your enthusiasm for visual communication, developing existing design skills by taking creative risks, engage in experimental approaches to design briefs, enhance creative thinking skills and gain an insight and understanding of contemporary design practices.

    It is still possible to join the course at this stage if you have not completed Part 1, however you will need to have some prior knowledge of the basic principles used in design and prior experience using the Adobe software programmes; InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
