What is the course about?

This is a introductory course to pointe work. We will work at strengthening the ankles, feet and core and introduce the basics at the barre, including rises, releve's, echappe's, bourree's and courus.

What will we cover?

How to strengthen and point your feet, tendu and dégagés wearing pointe shoes, relevés on one and on two legs, relevés passes, echappés, pas de bourrées and courus.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Rise onto the pointe with correct alignment
  • Demonstrate increased strength in the feet and ankles
  • Recognise how the feet are used for pointe work
  • Perform on two feet as well as one foot

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for people with a basic knowledge of classical ballet but not for complete beginners.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a practical dance class. Class will be taught mainly at the ballet barre with exercises given to practice outside of class.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need pointe shoes for this class. If you are not sure whether you have got the right fit from the shop, do not sew on the ribbons and elastics so we can check and you can exchange your shoes if necessary.

Many like to purchase a resistance band and a small Pilates ball for private practice away from the studio.  You can discuss these with the course tutor.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the department.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue with this class, move up to Ballet pointe: improvers or or try one of our many other dance courses
