What is the course about?

The course aims to provide further knowledge and understanding of the Portuguese language and to develop the 4 language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). It also gives an insight into Portuguese-speaking countries' cultures and ways of life.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will continue developing all four skills, with emphasis on speaking and listening. Homework will be given for a complete integration of all skills.

Topics: current affairs, Brazilian history, literature and arts through newspapers, magazines, excerpts from books, podcasts, video clips and websites.

Grammar: revision of conjunctions, all the subjunctive tenses (particularly the future subjunctive), as well as the future and conditional tenses.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

Be able to express yourself more correclty and with more confidence, and be able to talk about all the topics discussed during the course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to express yourself in Portuguese fairly accurately, especially the use of present, future and the various forms of past tense and use of the subjunctive and you will have studied Portuguese for at least five years.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Christina Baum

Christina Baum is a Brazilian-British Portuguese and English teacher (CELTA) and a literary translator based in London. She has over 20 years’ experience in teaching and believes that effective learning means a fun experience. She teaches all levels of Portuguese (Celpe-Bras, A-Level Portuguese and literature) and English. She has been teaching at City Lit since October 2019. She is also an external examiner for the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge and an oral examiner for Celpe-Bras – the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, awarded by Brazil's Ministry of Education. Christina translates from and into Portuguese, some key translations include Pulse by Julian Barnes, Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala, and We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She has nine years’ experience running literary festivals in South America, Europe and the Middle East. Christina holds a BA and an MFA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck, University of London, where she is currently studying for her PhD in Creative Writing.
