What is the course about?

This introductory routine includes shiatsu techniques and massage of the neck, shoulders, arms and back. On-Site massage is performed through clothes and is suitable for working on a chair at home.

Neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back massage routine (practical).
Contraindications to onsite massage
Benefits of onsite massage.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform a simple neck, shoulder, back, massage through clothing using some pressure point and massage strokes
- Recognise when massage is contraindicated
- Recognise some localised structures of the body: e.g. vertebrae, scapula, shoulder muscles, etc.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Previous bodywork experience is helpful, but not necessary. Students should be prepared to work on each other within the group. You are required to read & write short sentences, follow verbal instructions & extract information from handouts.

- Cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure, severe varicose veins, heart problems, thrombosis)
- Bone or joint disorders (Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis)
- Pregnancy (or post natal)
- Endocrine disorders
- Knee Problems (for Shiatsu, Thai massage & introductory massage courses only)
- Is there anything else we should know about your health before you enrol for a course? If there is, please let the Health & Lifestyle Studies team know.
If accepted onto a course, a student could be given alternative practical tasks & adjustments may be made where reasonable. However, a student could be asked to leave the course if any situation were to arise which could endanger the well being of that student, or any other student. It is for instance not suitable to work on another student, if you are taking medication that affects your concentration or if you have uncontrolled fits which could cause a danger to others during a relevant activity.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical demonstrations, talks, question & answer, pair work, group work, discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is advisable to bring disposable antiseptic wipes. There is no removal of clothing for this course. Students should wear loose comfortable clothing. .

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Students may use this as an introductory course if they wish to go on to our professional diploma courses in massage and complementary Therapies.
