Description

What is the course about?

This is a practical dance class in which we venture back to the 1920s with the hot jazz sounds of the Charleston. Learn original Charleston choreography as we dance along to music of the 20s and 30s. On the last day you have the option of being filmed performing the Charleston choreography, this is also a chance for you to wear your best vintage style outfits. A great way of having fun and improving fitness whilst learning a unique and impressive new skill.

What will we cover?

The course will include: Warm up and stretch, history and origin of the Charleston, Charleston as performing dance, musicality, challenging dance sequences and learning a choreographed piece 1920s style.
Learn more challenging Charleston steps combination such as the Savoy Kick and variations of the Propella. Explore styling, improvisation and musicality. Put techniques into practice whilst performing choreography. Build confidence in your movement and dance with greater expression.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

•Demonstrate learning a new dance style
•Perform a Charleston dance choreography
•Use the Charleston and its influence on other dance styles such as Lindy hop, Tap dancing and Hip Hop.
•Use your performing skills for other dance styles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

These workshops are suitable for those with some previous dance experience and for those who have completed the beginner’s and improvers courses. The routines are faster paced with more characterisation, formation and choreography.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance and choreography
• Working as a group and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There is no work outside the class. The course will be taught verbally, through demonstration and with the use of music. Some video material may be shown to the group, this will be provided by the teacher.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. The classes are best undertaken in jazz shoes or comfortable shoes with non-grip soles, for this reason trainers are not recommended. Bring a vintage costume (optional) for the final day of the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Speak to the teacher or contact the drama, dance and speech department for advice and guidance.

If you like charleston music, you are in for a treat. I'm not a great dancer, but this course is a great way to exercise your brain and the rest of your body.
Moreover, you'll learn a variety of steps which you can use outside the class.

It was great to learn other elements of Charleston/jazz. Recommended for students who are already familiar with Charleston as it's very fast (but fun). Two classes was not enough though :-) Please could we have more weekend classes like these.
