What is the course about?
This course explores Chinese history through a number of imperial dynasties up to communism. It considers political, cultural, social and economic patterns, and will take an interdisciplinary approach by looking at Chinese History through a variety of source materials including text and material cultures.
What will we cover?
- Rebellions, uprisings, and war
- Confucianism, philosophy and education
-Culture, literature and art
-Trade and the Silk Road.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Discuss aspects of general knowledge of the history of China
- Describe a variety of sources, from text to material culture and identify its relevance in the development of China
- Analyse patterns of continuity and change in the history of China.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Anyone can take this course and no particular prior skills are required, other than curiosity and an open mind.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught in classroom setting mainly through lectures, source material and discussions. There will be a very small amount of preparatory reading available on Google Classroom.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Louise studied History and Ancient History at the University of Reading. She specialised in Russian History for her MA at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. She completed her PGCE at the University of Roehampton and has taught A' Level History for eighteen years. Louise has a keen interest in world history, particularly in social history, archival sources and heritage. She believes learning about history should be interesting, accessible and thought-provoking. She likes to include primary source material and encourages discussions. When not teaching, Louise enjoys walking, swimming, playing board games and spending time with her children and her cat.
