What is the course about?

*How our use of body language and verbal delivery can enhance our communication skills and the way we are seen by others and ourselves.
*Mind/Body connection with breathing technique for strong vocal ability and overcoming nerves.
*Clarity and dynamic delivery of the spoken word.
*Developing rapport through flexible thinking for a feeling of shared understanding.
*The opportunity to develop presentation skills to a higher level.
*Gaining a deeper understanding of how we individually come across to others.
*Using techniques and theories to assist us and gain a sense of presence and impact.

What will we cover?

Breathing and posture.
How our habitual tendencies affect how others see us.
Keeping nerves in check.
Voice and vocal variety.
Vocal tone, resonance and energy.
Articulation for clarity of message.
Gaining rapport with our audience.
Developing a sense of presence and status.
Good use of gesture.
Active Listening and awareness of open eye contact.
Engaging an audience.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Feel more confident, positive and energised when communicating with others.
Be more aware about how your sense of presence can affect others around you.
Develop and project a pleasing personal style.
Establish and maintain a resourceful relationship through rapport.
Be more intuitive about using vocal variety and clarity in the spoken word.
Adjust your volume accordingly to suit the environment.
Have a greater knowledge of how gestures can strengthen your words.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students whose first language is not English will need to be fully competent in speaking, reading and writing.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will comprise of talks, discussion, role play and observation, with opportunity for group feedback and evaluation. There will be practical and experiential activities, including individual, pair and small group exercises. The programme aims to build on the individual's skills, applying them to both social and work situations.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Stephanie Lunn

Stephanie Lunn is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, and has an MSc in Strategic HR from University of Hull and a Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching form Birkbeck. She was a UK and Global HR Director and Business Partner in media and professional services companies, including Fleishman-Hillard, Agency.Com; Yahoo!, Cake and MPC before founding BluJacket Human Resources Consultancy. She has been teaching presentation skills at City Lit for many years, returning in 2016 after a break to bring up her daughter.
