What is the course about?

This short course introduces you to how contemporary artists use collage and mixed media and how you can explore and experiment with different techniques through a series of practical exercises, to create complete pieces of work or studies that can be used for further development.

What will we cover?

- Identify some contemporary artists working with collage and the techniques used
- Create work using a variety of collage techniques
- Create mixed media work
- Incorporate a more explorative, open-minded approach to your own artistic practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

* Work with ideas around form, space, scale and juxtaposition
* Make use of assemblage, collage and decollage
* Working with found imagery and objects
* Utilise your own experimental mark-making.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners or those looking to experiment with new techniques.
Bring an open mind and sense of adventure.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Presentations, demonstrations, group discussion and individual tuition. You will work individually and in groups. Come with an open mind and a willingness to experiment and to collaborate with others.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials will be provided - your tutor will advise you on what other mixed-media materials to bring in with you. This will include: newspapers, magazines, unusual papers and materials, found objects etc.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This introductory course may inspire you to develop your work in this area by enrolling onto 'Contemporary collage projects' or 'Collage and mixed media' courses.
