What is the course about?

Explore the creative possibilities of drawing through a series of practical drawing tasks. You will explore techniques that develop key drawing concepts: function of line, tone, texture, form, composition, and mark making. You will investigate spatial relationships through basic measuring and constructing a composition. Relevant examples of work from artists will be discussed in relation to the drawings you are making.

What will we cover?

• Accuracy to represent a form.
• Using the components of drawing – line, tone and mark-making.
• An introduction to composition and spatial relationships.
• The work of other artists’ and practitioners.
• Reflect on your own progress and learning.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Use techniques to record subjects accurately from observation.
• Begin to make compositional decisions to determine spatial relationships.
• Recognise hand and eye co-ordination as something personal as you develop a drawing.
• Identify drawing methods and approaches used by a range of relevant artists.
• Reflect on your learning in the context of making a drawing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners, no experience is necessary. Course. It is ideal for those new to drawing from observation in a studio environment.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic drawing materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including paper, pencils, charcoal. Students are welcome to bring any additional specialist materials.

Kim Scouller

Kim is an award winning figurative artist. She studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (1999-2003) and the Royal Drawing School (2007-09). Her studio work focuses on painting directly from subjects such as still-life and the figure and portrait. Working predominantly in oils she uses gestural paint handling to seek out the emergent subject. Kim exhibits her work regularly and has had work selected for the BP Portrait Award, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Lynn Painter Stainers Prize, ING Discerning Eye and more recently the Scottish Portrait Award (2019). She is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, most notably in 2005 she was the winner of the Aspect Prize, one of Scotland’s most prestigious painting prizes for emerging artists. An experienced art tutor, Kim has taught students of all ages and levels at institutions such as The Royal Drawing School, Candid Arts Trust, Central Saint Martins, London Drawing and London College of Communication.
