What is the course about?
This course focuses on drawing as a process, building on observational skills previously gained. You will explore a wider range of subject matter and the tools to explore dynamics within a composition. Through a series of tasks and projects, you will develop a more personal visual language in your drawings. You will work in the studio environment and have an off-site drawing session when conditions allow.
What will we cover?
• The exploration of more complex spatial relationships to represent a subject.
• Working in a range of scales and mediums.
• Visual elements and dynamics in a composition.
• Using taught techniques to describe 3-dimensional form and spatial relationships.
• Reflect and analyse other artists’ work.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Draw more accurately from observation using methods and processes acquired through previous drawing experience.
• Describe 3-dimensional form and spatial depth using taught techniques.
• Recognise and discuss compositional choices, individually and within a group drawing session.
• Explore different forms of visual elements and use in a range of drawing contexts.
• Recognise the work of a variety of artists and the expressive potential for your own drawing.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a improvers/intermediate course, ideal for those who have a basic understanding of drawing in a studio environment or working from observation. Ideally you will already have completed Drawing 1 before enrolling on this course or understand basic strategies to describe a 3D form into 2D.
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

This course is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Basic drawing materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including paper, pencils, charcoal. Students are welcome to bring any additional specialist materials.

I am an artist living and working in London, trained at Chelsea School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art (University College London). I have shown in solo and group exhibitions around the UK and in Europe (including the Whitechapel Open and Threadneedle Painting Prize) with work in numerous private collections and featured in Drawing and Painting by Kate Wilson (Thames and Hudson, 2015) For over 30 years I have taught in a wide variety of contexts, lecturing in many British art schools, including Manchester (MA), Cheltenham (BA), Central St Martins, UAL. I have run drawing workshops for Microsoft Seattle, Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, Electronic Arts UK, Vanguard Animation, Tell Me in Mountain View, CA and Kaos Studios (THQ) in New York amongst others. I have also taught renowned opera, television and film directors how to draw (NDAs duly signed) From 2021-22 I was the recipient of an Arts Council England Project Award to conduct research into drawing and the processing of trauma. I have tenure at City Lit where I deliver drawing and painting courses exploring how these activities alter visual perception, with a strong emphasis on thinking through doing.
