What is the course about?

Working from plants and flowers you will be introduced to the formal elements of drawing; exploring line, tone, texture, mark making and colour. Using a variety of drawing materials you will be encouraged to try an experimental approach taking inspiration from exciting contemporary artists and designers.

What will we cover?

We will look at the visual recording of plants and flowers in art and design, exploring a wide variety of art traditions from botanical illustration to more contemporary artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Gary Hume and Lucienne Day. Each week we cover a different formal element in drawing taking an artist or designer as our inspiration. These images will be used as starting points for discussion and as inspiration for our own personal expressions of the subject matter.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Apply skills in observational study using a range of drawing media
- Use line, tone, and texture as expressive and descriptive elements
- Confidently select and simplify complex forms
- Develop personal compositions and Interpretations, using other artists as inspiration.
