What is the course about?

In this 4-week course, we will explore two broad philosophical concepts (art and freedom) and see ways in which various philosophers have tackled them by examining significant documents and considering the implications of the topic for the current times.

What will we cover?

Topic 1: Art
Here are some possible questions which will guide our discussions
• Is it possible to like a piece of art without understanding it?
• Could art cause harm to the spectators?
• Is technological development depriving art of its inner value?
• Would art still be meaningful if we were totally unmoved by it?

Topic 2: Freedom
Here are some possible questions which will guide our discussions
• Are we free to choose?
• Should freedom of speech be limited?
• Can political action be entirely free?
• If we knew our future, would we still be free?
• Do we need to be absolutely free in order to be held responsible?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• have a deeper understanding of some philosophical concepts and constructs behind the ideas of art and freedom
• acknowledge and discuss the implications of the issues raised by philosophers on the two main topics for our own times
• develop your linguistic skills and vocabulary, enabling you to articulate your own thoughts in a philosophical debate.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is delivered entirely in French and is suitable for students at level 4 (B2) or who have studied the language for 5 years. No specific technical background is required, as the content is designed to be accessible to individuals with a general interest in philosophical issues and ideas.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

It is an interactive course, and it is structured in such a way as to promote students’ involvement and contribution to the debate. The broader aim being that of using French in a lively discussion on philosophical issues and ideas. This will be done with the aid of many sources, ranging from texts, videos, visual art, music, etc, which instantiate the general theme and allow for a better comprehension of the ideas involved.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.
