What is the course about?

Débattre en français is designed for advanced learners eager to practice debating on contemporary issues. In this course, you will explore diverse topics related to politics, environment, and society, honing your language skills while engaging in thought-provoking discussions.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Introduction to debate structure and techniques in French.
- Debate preparation using authentic sources (articles, videos, blog posts).
- Teamwork and collaboration through assigned debate roles (opening speaker, rebuttal speaker, etc.).
- Post-debate reflections and feedback.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses emphasize spoken interaction, including pair work, group activities, and role plays. The sessions will involve dynamic discussions and practical application of debate skills. To prepare for debates, materials will be sent in advance, requiring some dedicated time outside the class for review before each session.

Masa Uzelac

Dr Maša Uzelac holds a BA (Hons) and an MA degree in Romance Studies from the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. She specialised in French, Italian, and Portuguese language and literature. She has an extensive experience in MFL teaching, both in Higher Education and as a private language tutor. Maša completed a PhD in French Studies at the University of Galway in Ireland. Her research interests include literature, politics, and philosophy. Maša's most recent research project explored the concept of ambivalent utopianism in the works of authors Michel Houellebecq and Aldous Huxley. Maša lived in different countries including Serbia, Portugal, France and Ireland. She is currently based in Liverpool and works as an Associate Tutor in French at Edge Hill University. She speaks Serbian, French, English, Italian, Portuguese and Hungarian
