What is the course about?

Whether you are a shower singer, an experienced singer or just like listening to songs in French, this course is for anyone who would like to improve their French pronunciation while enjoying beautiful songs from different French speaking countries.

What will we cover?

We will learn or improve our pronunciation of tricky French sounds (e.g. different sounds of letters “e” and “u”, of the “r”, nasal sounds) and other phonological features such as silent letters or “liaisons”, using famous or not so famous songs from different French speaking countries. There will be plenty of oral pronunciation practice, but no pressure to sing!

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-pronounce French sounds and words more accurately
-be more intelligible when speaking or singing in French
-recognise spoken or sung words in French more easily
There may be other outcomes depending on the needs and interests of the group.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

A basic knowledge of French pronunciation is recommended (e.g. you have attended French classes or the “French
pronunciation through songs/LFW14” course).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Unlike our usual French language courses, instructions and explanations will be given in English and the translation of the songs will be provided if necessary, however there will be ample pair and small group pronunciation practice and opportunities to sing whole songs (although there will be no pressure to do so).

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

no.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This will depend on your level of French. We offer other workshops on French speaking songs or singers with a different focus (e.g. improving grammar, culture, vocabulary). Please contact languages@citylit.ac.uk for advice.

Estelle Hélouin

Estelle became interested in languages in secondary school, in France, where she had an inspiring and brilliant English teacher who made students speak the language for the whole lesson. This approach was quite ground-breaking at the time! After studying English at university and working briefly as a translator, she developped a passion for teaching after discovering a course to become a teacher of French as a foreign language when she moved to London many years ago. Estelle has taught adults from all different backgrounds and levels and has also enjoyed being a language learner herself. “Being quite musical, I particularly love the sound of languages, I am also passionate about learning in general. I think learning languages not only helps you discover other cultures but also enable people to develop many competences such as communication skills”.
