What is the course about?
This intensive and focused course is for students with some observational drawing or painting experience, wanting to understand more traditional methods for creating painted portraits in oil.
The class will start with basic sketching in paint and progress to making more completed paintings.
What will we cover?
You will work primarily from observation of portrait models.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Paint portraits more accurately
- Paint portraits from a variety of viewpoints
- Understand composition choices and apply it to your portraits
- Draw a head that looks more three dimensional
- Make a tonal portrait painting
- Mix colour in oil paint.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Open to students with some basic drawing or painting experience.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will learn by practical demonstration, looking at the work of traditional portrait painters, one to one tuition, tutor demonstrations and group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic painting and drawing materials are provided, but you may want to bring a canvas or board to paint on.
Otherwise you can use primed paper that will be provided.

A variety of portrait and or life classes at City Lit including Portraits 2, Painting portrait classes.
