What is the course about?
Further develop your skill and confidence in playing recorders in C or F.
What will we cover?
- Technique: fingering, breathing and articulation
- Scales and pieces in keys including up to 3 sharps and flats
- Basic ornamentation (e.g. trills, mordents and turns)
- Broadening repertoire in a variety of styles
- Music reading/music theory related to the exercises and pieces played.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Know the fingering for more notes on your recorder (descant / treble / tenor)
- Play with iimproved control of breath, articulation and intonation
- Read and execute a variety of basic embellishments (e.g. trills, mordents and turns)
- Recognise and perform various different styles of recorder music
- Read and interpret music notation accurately.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for those who have been learning recorder for at least a year, or who have played before and want to brush up their skills to get back into recorder playing.
You need to be able to listen to and follow instructions in English.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
• Tutor explanation, presentation and some live demonstration
• Playing along with the tutor and other students
• Self-directed study and group study of materials on Google Classroom
• Practising your own parts for pieces
• Listening and score reading.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please supply your own instrument(s), as well as a notebook, pencil and eraser.
Music materials will be supplied by the tutor via Google Classroom.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may wish to progress to Recorder ensembles, Early music ensemble, and/or repeate Recorders 2 on a different size instrument; your tutor can advise.
You may wish to support your learning through Musicianship and Music theory and/or Music history courses.
Having graduated top of her class from the Cork School of Music (B.Mus), Caoimhe moved to London, where she gained a distinction in her Masters in Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was also awarded the school's Concert Recital Diploma (for outstanding recital performance). Caoimhe went on to become an Artist Fellow at the conservatoire and was also invited to take part in the Handel House Talent Scheme (2014-15). She has studied with Ian Wilson, Robert Ehrlich, Pamela Thorby (GSMD) and Elizabeth Jones (CSM), as well as pariticipating in masterclasses with Kees Boeke, Karl van Steenhoven, Piers Adams, Sebastien Marq, Dan Laurin, Drora Bruck and Eric Bosgraaf. Caoimhe has achieved a number of competition successes in Ireland and the UK. She was a semi-finalist in the Irish Freemason's Young Musician of the Year for two consecutive years, a finalist in the Worshipful Company of Needlemaker's competition, a finalist in the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarships and won first prize in the Recorder Conservatoire competition at the North London Festival of Music. www.palisanderecorders.com
