What is the course about?

The course will enable students to communicate in basic Spanish, to understand and use the language for travel or social purposes and to enjoy and appreciate the cultural background of Spanish-speaking countries.

What will we cover?

Greetings, asking about meaning and pronunciation of words, spelling, asking for repetition, personal information, likes and dislikes, identifying people and family, description of people, shopping, quantities, prices, ordering in a bar, description of places and towns, asking for information, telling the time, talking about frequency, modes of transport.

Culture: Famous people form the Spanish-speaking world, Spanish bars, Costa Rica, Sevilla, Bogotá, Colombia.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- introduce yourself, say hello and goodbye
- ask about meaning of words, spell words
- give and ask for basic information about yourself and others
- talk about your family, describe and identify people
- buy items in shops
- talk about food
- order in a bar
- describe places, cities and towns
- ask for and tell the time
- ask for information
- say what you can do in your town
- read short simple texts about some Spanish speaking cities and countries.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Complete beginners - no previous knowledge of Spanish required. If you have some basic knowledge of Spanish, contact the Language department as there may be a more suitable course for you.
If you already speak a romance language like Italian, French, Portuguese or Romanian, LS041 or LS071 Spanish 1 rápidamente: module 1 may be a more appropriate course for you. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/self-assess-your-level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Based on Units 1-6.

Please note that the hybrid edition includes, among other material, a digital version of the Nos Vemos Hoy 1 exercise book. If you would like to also have a paper copy of the exercise book, please do so, but it is not a requirement.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Spanish beginners: module 3 in September. Please enrol as soon as possible as spaces cannot be guaranteed.
