Interested in teaching lipreading to adults? This introductory course leads to the City and Guilds Level 3 national teaching qualification. Combined with our GT106, you can become a qualified lipreading teacher.

A brief introduction to the history of Deaf people in Britain and the development of British Sign Language. This fascinating course is taught in BSL, with a BSL-English interpreter available.

Learn strategies to help you speak more easily. You'll also work on becoming less sensitive about stammering, reducing avoidance strategies and developing self confidence. Designed specifically for people who stammer /stutter.

If you often manage to conceal your stammering (also known as stuttering), this course will help you to understand your particular type of stammering, reduce negative feelings, learn strategies to speak more easily and develop self-confidence.

Part-time 19 days spread over 10 lecture blocks







This course will be a mixed delivery mode. Students will attend City Lit, Covent Garden, London for some of the teaching blocks and access some of the blocks online.







You will attend lecture and teaching practice blocks on the following dates.



2024: October 18th/19th November 15th/16th December 13th/14th



2025: January 10th/11th February 7th/8th March 7th/8th



April 4th/5th May 9th May 16th/17th June 13th/14th







If combined with a teaching qualification such as our GT105 Award in Education and Training, this will qualify you to teach Lipreading in the Further Education sector.

This is an experiential course for people who stammer that will introduce you to key elements of self-compassion through some theory and practice. Research on the general population has consistently found that cultivating self-compassion contributes to greater well-being, reduced self-criticism and greater self-acceptance.

Develop your lipreading skills and strategies for face-to-face communication and keep up-to-date with relevant equipment and services. This course is suitable if you have completed improvers module 1.







This course will be taught in spoken English and not in sign language.

The course will focus on Henry VIII, King of England and his six wives. Learners will explore the key facts about King Henry VIII, Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Kateryn Parr.

This exciting course covers information about the history of the Deaf community, education, media and sport to a more advanced and in depth level. It is taught in BSL, and hearing people with a minimum of level 2 in BSL are welcome.

Feeling a bit rusty when it comes to working on your stammering? If you have already completed some therapy either at City Lit or elsewhere, this workshop offers you the ideal opportunity to revise what you’ve learnt so far, practise your speech techniques and to become more open about, and desensitised to, stammering.
