What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to practise using Welsh in a wider range of contexts and for a wider range of purposes; to expand their grammatical and communicative abilities in the language; and to promote interest in and awareness of the language and its culture today.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will cover the final units of Cwrs Uwch.

Topics will include community, family, food, arts and culture. We'll also consider aspects of Welsh culture and myths.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Read and analyse texts of increasing complexity
- Continue to recognise differences between south and north Walian
- Respond in increasingly complex sentences
- Use different kinds of subordinate clauses
- Confidently use different forms of the future tense
- Begin to use more idiomatic language and expressions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed a course at Canolradd level or have equivalent experience (i.e. have studied for approximately 3 years). You should know the basic word orders of Welsh and know how to form sentences in the present, past and future. You should be able to accurately answer “yes” and “no” (using the different forms of the verb ‘to be’). You should be able to ask for help in Welsh when you don’t understand.
This course is at CEFR Level B2.

For students continuing their Welsh learning journey with City Lit: this module follows on from Welsh 3 Upper, Module 1.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The coursebook Dysgu Cymraeg: Uwch 1 (B2)- De Cymru/South Wales (Y Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol/National Centre for Learning Welsh) (1999686101) will be used. It costs approximately £10 or can be downloaded as a PDF for free from https://dysgucymraeg.cymru/dysgu/cwricwlwm-a-chwrslyfrau/

• There are 3 coursebooks at lefel Uwch, so please be sure to download or purchase the correct one: Uwch 1 (south Wales).
• A North Walian edition is available; however, southern Welsh will be taught in the class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Welsh upper 3, module 3.

Jack Pulman-Slater Tutor Website

Shwmae! Jack dw i! I first joined City Lit in 2017-2019 and it's great to be back teaching Cymraeg and Svenska both in person at City Lit and online. I was brought up in north Pembrokeshire and was fortuntate enough to attend Welsh- and bilingual- medium schools where I acquired Welsh. The Welsh language has given me lots of opportunities and it's brilliant to be able to welcome new people into the language as a tutor. Welsh is a vibrant, living and thriving language, not just in Wales but also here at City Lit. Hej! Jag heter Jack! I love learning languages and started learning Swedish with City Lit a few years ago and I became obsessed by this fasincating Germanic language. This was a journey that recently led me to take my C1 exam at Folkuniversitetet Göteborg. Learning and speaking Swedish has given me access to a entirely new country, culture and perpsective. Learning one Scandinvian language is also a gateway to the others— it's "learn 1, get 3!".
