What is the course about?
The course provides guided and structured pronunciation practice for learners of Welsh.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Consonants and the “double letters” of Welsh
Vowels (and how their pronunciation changes between 1- and multi-syllable words)
Word stress
Sentence level intonation
We’ll also cover the most common pronunciation mistakes for Welsh learners (whose first language is English).
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand how Welsh spelling relates to pronunciation and vice versa.
- Be able to produce previously difficult sounds with increased confidence and accuracy.
- Understand how a mispronunciation comes about and what you need to do to produce a sound intelligibly.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for Welsh learners of all levels who are looking to improve their pronunciation accuracy and intelligibility.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course uses guided pronunciation practice. This means that instead of simply listening and repeating, you’ll be given pointers on how to physically produce unfamiliar sounds both in isolation and in context. Visual prompts will be used to help guide you in producing different sounds and intonation patterns.

Students will be given access to resources and materials after the class.
You will need a pair of headphones and a quiet environment in which to join the class online from.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?

I love learning languages and started learning Swedish with City Lit a few years ago and I became obsessed by this fasincating Germanic language. This was a journey that recently led me to take my C1 exam at Folkuniversitetet Göteborg. Learning and speaking Swedish has given me access to a entirely new country, culture and perpsective. Learning one Scandinvian language is also a gateway to the others— it's "learn 1, get 3!".
