Time: 14:45 - 17:15
Location: KS - Keeley Street

News editors are inundated with badly written press releases. How do you get yours noticed? Learn the basics of writing effective press releases for business and the public sector, and get feedback on your own work.

What is the course about?

If you are expected to write press releases as part of your job or voluntary work, and are unsure about how to go about it, this is the course for you.

What will we cover?

Defining your message;
writing a good press release - what information to include and how to construct it;
distributing your release;
back-up queries;

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- select the message you wish to give
- identify a good/bad press release
- choose information that needs to be included
- recognise what news editors and reporters expect.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group teaching with practical examples of good and bad press releases and practical exercises.

All writing courses at City Lit will involve an element of workshop. This means that students will produce work which will be discussed in an open and constructive environment with the tutor and other students. The college operates a policy of constructive criticism, and all feedback on another student’s work by the tutor and other students should be delivered in that spirit.

For classes longer than one day regular reading and writing exercises will be set for completion at home to set deadlines.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.

Very comprehensive overview of writing a press release, and positive group atmosphere. Useful exercises helped me to construct a good press release. Would recommend both course and tutor.
