What is the course about?
Zines (or Fanzines) are self-published booklets, which often have a distinctive ‘Do-It-Yourself’ style, as they originated in Punk culture in the 1970’s.
In this course, you will make your own low-tech publication - from start to finish, covering designing the publication, layouts, curating content as well as explore typography and experimental approaches to folds and binds.
Along the way, learn about vibrant ‘zine culture’; its history, contemporary iterations, where to find it, and how to participate. Be playful with imagery and use this as an opportunity to spring board other creative projects.
What will we cover?
• Image creation – using analogue and digital media
• Collage techniques
• Typography – creation and editing
• How to enjoy and use ‘mistakes’ to develop ideas
• Page layout – of images and type
• Format design
• Booklet construction.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Identify approaches to zine making
• Demonstrate creative approaches in image making
• Explain low-fi technical processes in both construction and printing
• Present a final zine related to a personal topic.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is ideal for all artists, designers and budding creatives. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience (all we ask is that you arrive with exciting ideas and/or imagery you wish to use).
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be delivered through:
- Presentations
- Demonstrations
- Practical work
- Individual and group tutoring
- Group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
