Course outline

What is the course about?

Recent developments in NLP, models that are easy to use and are effective in self-help, therapy, business coaching and mentoring.

What topics will we cover?

David Grove's 'Clean Language': questions that help people explore their mental landscapes without any influence from the questioner. Uses: to make changes in personal, business, therapeutic, coaching, sporting and life contexts.

Charles Faulkner’s 'Language of Metaphor'. We speak in language but we experience through our emotions, our metaphors come from deep inside us and often leak out unbidden. Metaphors are true descriptions of how we feel and view situations. If you want to know what someone really thinks, listen for their metaphors.

Judith de Lozier and Robert Dilts 'Somatic Syntax' works kinaesthetically to identify personal resources and information within our bodeis, using floor work. Good for identifying blocks, finding hidden resources and exploring solutions.

Unified Field Theory explains how NLP tools and techniques fit together: a framework developed by Robert Dilts.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify and use some new NLP models
Evaluate changes that have taken place in the field in the last 40 years
Use NLP techniques to generate greater personal, professional, behavioural and emotional choices.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some previous knowledge of NLP, say from workplace training is useful. Or NLP diploma or practitioner status. This course is not suitable for Master Practitioner level or above.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Experiential learning is key: the most important thing you can do to enjoy and benefit from this course is to bring along your own curiosity and experiences as whole heartedly as you can. There will also be discussion of ideas, pair and group work and learning through demonstrations.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional materials besides pen and paper are required, as notes will be provided. Students may wish to purchase books that are referred to during the couse but this is not essential or as important as active participation. Recommended books will be listed for you.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; study support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 189 of the 09-10 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any of the other City Lit courses on NLP could be of interest as a follow-up since every NLP course is unique due to the personal content that is brought to the training. Participants may wish to seek accreditation with commercial NLP training providers or develop their interest via counselling and psychotherapeutic courses. Each participant will have his or her own response. Suggestions are given in the course handbook.
