Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

    Understanding data, producing it and making decisions based on it are now essential skills for everyone both inside and outside work. Most of us are doing this every day without realising. This course will help you understand and interpret data such as "people make between 1 to 18 calculations each day, with a mean of 3." You will focus on what data is, why it is important, what to use it for. You will learn about different types of calculations, how to use measurements accurately plusidentifying and presenting data patterns. By the end of the course you will have developed the key mathematical, numerical and analytical skills you need to use and make sense of important data at work, in the news and in your daily life. Please note, this course is for students who are around pre-GCSE level or who have gained maths qualifications but haven't used maths for a long time.

    Do you want to develop the English skills needed for office work? Would you like to improve your formal work emails? Your phone manner? Your digital skills for essential administration? This course will help you with all the English you need to work successfully in an office environment such as answering the phone professionally, taking and leaving messages, writing clear and concise emails and letters on a PC, spelling common words correctly and using good punctuation. By the end of this course, you will confident you can work successfully in an office environment.

Would you like your English to be more automatic? This course will help you become more relaxed when you speak and write English so you can be confident you can express yourself in a way people understand and not be worried about making mistakes.   5. ESOL: How to think in English (E3-L1)

    Do you want to stop translating from the your first language? Do you want your English to be more automatic and fluent? On this course, the emphasis is on thinking in English. In each class, you will have a problem, a dilemma, a puzzle or a challenging issue to solve, address or debate. You will need to learn to read or listen between the lines, understand implications and indirect English. You will learn how to analyse text or talks and make decisions or judgements about what has happened and why. You will need to give reasons for your answers, solutions, comments and learn to express yourself in detail so other people can understand you. You will learn about how to speak to the point. These discussions and opinion-giving will improve your vocabulary, your pronunciation and your communication skills and help you think in and with English.

  6. How to think in maths: problem-solving, analysing, making decisions (L1+)

    How are you going to improve or refine your maths? Will this happen by simply applying the rules your teacher gives you? How will you know that you really understand the maths you are doing? On this course, you will practise thinking mathematically. You will work on 'rich' tasks where you need to problem-solve, ask the right questions and think your way through conundrums, puzzles and other issues requiring mathematical approaches. The problems and their solutions will drive the maths. You will become absorbed by the issue and, with your tutor's support, you will improve your ability to analyse, approach situations with a mathematical mind and make effective decisions both inside and outside work.

  7. Develop your writing and language skills (level 1-level 2)

    Have you been learning English for a long time but find your writing just doesn’t seem to improve? Are you quite a fluent speaker but find formal speaking difficult? Do you feel ‘stuck’. This course will release you! You will focus on how to improve the structure of your writing both the whole text, paragraphs and sentences. You will work on understanding the grammar of the language, and the skills you learn to develop your writing will help you improve your more formal speaking whether this is for job interviews, meetings at work or giving presentations. This course is ideal if you have been living in the UK for several years, feel quite comfortable in speaking English as a second language, but lack confidence in your literacy skills.

  8. Office skills for ESOL students (entry 3-level 1)

    Would you like to work in an office? Not sure if your English or computing skills are good enough? Perhaps you already work in an office but want to improve your administration skills? Join this course and learn the English you need to answer the phone correctly, write good emails, letters and memos, and spell common words. At the same time, you will improve your digital computer skills including your word processing, file management, and emailing.

    Are you working with the public – in a shop, at reception, on the phone? Are you a cleaner who needs to talk to members of the public? This course will help you communicate at work with customers, your colleagues and your manager. You will learn how to speak fluently and politely and use the vocabulary you need for work. You will practise how to help a customer or a client, make suggestions, give advice, begin and end a conversation, take messages over the phone, and talk about products.

    Do you need to talk to members of the public at work - by phone, face-to-face, online? Do you understand your work colleagues? Does your supervisor send you emails you need to reply to? This course will help you become a good communicator at work mainly when speaking and listening but also when sending text messages and emails. You will practise how to interact and engage with customers, how to be polite, how to sell things, talk over the phone at call centres, take messages and talk at the same time, make small talk with work colleagues and write formal emails and polite text messages to your manager.
