This course is designed to help you build the essential maths skills needed to progress to the accredited Functional Skills Maths Level 1 course. You will develop your understanding of practical maths in everyday contexts, focusing on number operations, measurement, data handling, and problem-solving. The course will strengthen your confidence with the foundational maths concepts required for success at Level 1.
An assessment in Week 5, along with your attendance and participation, will determine whether you are ready to move on to the accredited course.
What will we cover?
You will work on:
Number skills: understanding and using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages in real-life situations.
Measurement: interpreting and using units of measurement, converting between units, and calculating perimeter, area, and volume.
Data handling: reading and interpreting graphs, tables, and charts, and calculating averages.
Problem-solving: applying maths knowledge to solve practical problems, developing reasoning and decision-making skills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a pre-Level 1 course. It is suitable for learners who have some basic maths skills (Entry 3 level) and want to prepare for the next step. You will need to complete an initial assessment before joining.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will learn through a mix of group work, pair work, practical activities, discussions, and digital resources.
You may be asked to complete short practice tasks at home to reinforce your learning.
You will complete a progress assessment in Week 5 to check your readiness for the accredited course.
Your attendance, participation, and commitment will also be reviewed.
Your tutor will give you feedback and discuss your next steps.
