Learn the fundamental skills needed to play Afro Cuban and Afro Brazilian rhythms and instruments. Begin with clavé and Rumba from Cuba. Study hand and stick technique, percussion notation and learn to play as an ensemble.

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of Latin percussion traditions, with emphasis on group playing. You will develop technique on the instruments, and will learn to play authentic rhythms, and sing accompanying chants and songs.

What will we cover?

- This short course will explore the most commonly heard and influential percussion traditions from Cuba and Brazil: Rumba, Mozambique and Bembé, and some generic bata toques from Cuba; Samba, Baiao, Maracatu etc. from Brazil.
- Hand and stick technique
- Learning by listening and reading percussion notation
- Learning to play together and keep good time.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Play essential grooves on a range of percussion instruments - congas, bell, shekere, surdo, pandeiro etc.
- Play in ensemble situations and lock into feel and pulse
- Read and understand 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 note notation for percussion
- build a sound practice routine
- Understand good time-keeping, relaxation when playing, good posture, and communication.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience of playing Latin percussion needed. Enthusiasm for, and appreciation of the style is important. If you have previous playing experience on other instruments you will benefit from the rich fund of rhythmic interplay found in this music form.

You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, listening, pair work and playing as a group. Learning by notation, by ear, and visual cues. Co-ordination exercises (walking, singing, clapping) to develop your sense of pulse/groove.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All written materials and instruments supplied. Bring note pad, tape recorder (if you have one).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may repeat the course and change your focus to different percussion istruments. Allied courses include drum set playing, Play congas, Tabla, and the rhythm class.
