What is the course about?

This is an opportunity to take your love of radio to the next level.
The course supports you with a tutor-editor and technician to develop and craft a pre-recorded radio programme or extended feature on a subject of your choice, mixing interview clips, music and sound effects into your own production. This course will be delivered online and is supported by a media technician.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Writing for, reading, and talking on air
Producing features and improving interview skills
Working up a radio pitch into a feature or programme
Editing the final package.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Decide on material and interviews.
Record material and select clips.
Organise your programme or extended feature, adding in music and special effects.
Write and record your microphone links.
Edit and put the finishing touches on your piece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone who has done Radio Improvers or has some broadcasting, podcasting, journalism or production experience or similar. Not suitable for beginners.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practice, class tutorials and discussions. This course will be delivered online with the support of a media technician. On advanced level courses only, students are given raw unedited footage for their own use.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Recorded material MAY be made available via Google Classroom at the end of the course in accordance with our privacy policies and data protection regulations.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Allis Moss

Dr Allis Moss is a freelance journalist and broadcaster. Allis has worked for a number of channels and publications including Radio 1,2,3,4, 5, Five Live and World Service. She has contributed to flagship programmes like Radio 4's 'From Our Own Correspondent', BBC World TV news, The New European, The Independent, Time Out Paris, and was a UK correspondent for Radio France and Radio Netherlands Worldwide. On historical themes, Allis has appeared on Radio 3's 'Free Thinking' and written-presented World Service's 'Witness' and 'Heart and Soul'. Allis also had her own weekly column in her local paper and has been spotted on centre court at Wimbledon tennis (standing still at the mic!) as announcer-blogger for the world-famous championships. She completed her history PhD as a White Rose Scholar for Leeds University and gained distinction as a postgraduate in Historical Studies at Oxford University. Allis is the author of the local history book ‘The Jigsaw Journey’ supported by an Arts-in-Action award telling the stories of a West Sussex town. Allis was also a writer-announcer for BBC1 for three years and taught at the Global Institute, London Met and Southampton Solent universities.
