What makes a good radio presenter? From ad-libbing to reading scripts (including your own if you want) to interviewing and reading the news. This course will help you develop a skillset for presenting, whether it’s radio broadcasting or online podcasting. The course is supported by a media technician who willl edit student recordings from each session. It is suitable for anyone wanting to kick-start a podcast or radio career, enhance presenting or performance skills or if you’re just looking to improve general confidence at the mic.

What is the course about?

Use discussion, professional tips and practice at the mic to develop your presenting skills. Learn techniques to write and read scripts and get them off the page to an audience; ad-lib; present with speech or music; read news; interview; make a short feature – a staple of any show.
This course is online and supported by a media technician. Students will work with both a tutor-editor and technician as in the broadcast profession. The course is the first of three that allows students to progress from complete beginner to an advanced level with the aim of being able to present and pitch programme ideas professionally.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

* Interviewing and knowing what questions to ask guests
* Ad-libbing and talking to your audience
* Building great content.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Present at the mic with more confidence
Feel more comfortable ad-libbing and scripting for an audience.
Read and understand how to create a news bulletin.
Conduct a radio interview and know what questions to ask different guests.
Present and produce a package.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners, through to those with some experience of presentation.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly.
• To read a script accurately.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical exercises; some preparation between classes may be required. This course will be online and supported by a media technician.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Recorded material MAY be made available via Google Classroom at the end of the course in accordance with our privacy policies and data protection regulations.

Allis Moss

Dr Allis Moss is a freelance journalist and broadcaster. Allis has worked for a number of channels and publications including Radio 1,2,3,4, 5, Five Live and World Service. She has contributed to flagship programmes like Radio 4's 'From Our Own Correspondent', BBC World TV news, The New European, The Independent, Time Out Paris, and was a UK correspondent for Radio France and Radio Netherlands Worldwide. On historical themes, Allis has appeared on Radio 3's 'Free Thinking' and written-presented World Service's 'Witness' and 'Heart and Soul'. Allis also had her own weekly column in her local paper and has been spotted on centre court at Wimbledon tennis (standing still at the mic!) as announcer-blogger for the world-famous championships. She completed her history PhD as a White Rose Scholar for Leeds University and gained distinction as a postgraduate in Historical Studies at Oxford University. Allis is the author of the local history book ‘The Jigsaw Journey’ supported by an Arts-in-Action award telling the stories of a West Sussex town. Allis was also a writer-announcer for BBC1 for three years and taught at the Global Institute, London Met and Southampton Solent universities.
