What is the course about?
This practical ballet barre course offers you a typical barre practice with the chance to learn more about the progression of exercises that develop and strengthen the body. Silver Swans® barre exercises have been specially adapted to older learners. Barre work helps build foundation ballet skills that will add to your proficiency in other kinds of dance or exercise that you do.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Barre work will include; plié, tendue, degagé, grand battement, adage and will follow a standard progression from slower more basic movements to those with more speed and dynamic.

Perform with improved technique
Recognise and perform sequences of movement
Demonstrate greater strength and balance
Show improved co-ordination and body alignment.
Use your improved knowledge in other disciplines.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This class is suitable for both beginners with a knowledge of ballet principles and foundation techniques and those with prior experience. It s not suitable however for the complete beginner with no previous dance experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is an online class. We recommend you prepare your home space to allow at least 2m squared with a sturdy support of chair, barre or worktop. The class is tutor led and the standard French vocabulary will be used. (You don't need to be able to speak French). Students will work as a group and sometimes individually. No work is required outside of the class.
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Tights. Leotard or clothing that does not restrict movement will allow your tutor to see your work more clearly. Ballet shoes either canvas or leather with elastics. Jock straps should be worn by men. Students to tie their hair back if it is long for their own saftey and comfort. No jewellery to be worn during class.

Kate began her dance training aged 5 and graduated from Rambert School. She went on to have an eclectic career as a freelance ballet and contemporary dancer performing in operas, contemporary dance projects, music videos and commercials, working with Ashely Page, Amir Hosseinpour and Wayne McGregor. Kate began her teaching career in 2014 and is a specialist in adult ballet, Elders Ballet; she teaches the Silver Swans ballet classes at City Lit. As well as teaching Dance GCSE, she has also enjoyed working with inclusive dance groups. Kate joined City Lit in 2018 and really enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge of this historic and artful dance genre. She is particularly keen on teaching adults and beginners as the resulting pride and sense of accomplishment from her students make all the hard work enjoyable and worthwhile. Kate has an interest in Pilates and Body Psychotherapy and is a certified BioDynamic massage therapist. One of her ambtions is to have four Jack Russell Terrier, two donkeys and a menagerie of farm animals. She enjoys walking in the countryside and is currently studying for some more ballet teaching qualifications.
