What is the course about?

You will develop your on-mic skills, and knowledge of the sector by performing various voice-overs individually and in groups.

What will we cover?

Solo radio commercials
Audio Guides
Small group recordings (various)
Voice reels.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Explain the demands of solo radio commercial recordings
Explain the demands of audio guide recordings
Explain the demands of various small group recording situations
Have an appreciation of what to include on a voice reel.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have completed “Voice-overs: Beginners”, or have comparative previous experience i.e. Acting for Radio; Radio Presenting or Character Voice., or in the industry.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
Speak English fluently and clearly
To sight-read a script accurately
Give and receive constructive feedback
Take notes

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical experience. You will be recorded and played back, and your work will be analysed by you, your fellow students and the tutor. Some scripts will need preparation prior to class. This course will be delivered in our media studio.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Recorded material MAY be made available at the end of the course in accordance with our privacy policies and data protection regulations.

John Eastman

John Eastman is a storytelling consultant, facilitator, and commercial voiceover artist. He spent many years as an actor in London - he toured the UK as Polonius in Hamlet and performed the lead in Ionesco’s The Lesson (Jury Prize, International Festival, Bucharest) - but now spends more time as a freelance teaching artist. After drama training in Queensland, Australia, John moved to London and completed his MA in Education from Central School of Speech and Drama. He has worked on many diverse education projects, as well as lecturing at London Contemporary College of the Arts and Brunel University. Ongoing projects include Royal National Theatre (Teaching Associate), event support work with Simply Simply, working with presentations at conferences and more recently Clod Ensemble (Health Sector Support) and working as a tutor with Microsoft. He has an active presence on Linked-In, and continues to perform storytelling upon request. He has been teaching Storytelling for Business and Pleasure at City Lit since 2010.
